Oh well, you might think ‘Body Towels’?!?! Of course, we’re talking about caring for our bodies (face aside for now). Many a times, we always look towards bath/shower time because that’s when we feel refreshed and clean after waking up or a hard work’s day. But how can we remain clean after bathing and drying up with old, dirty towels? A towel might look clean but harbor lots and lots of microorganisms and this can affect your bodily hygiene. A typical person after bathing, cleans up with a towel that hasn’t been washed for days and dries them back in his/her bathroom that has a high level of humidity of which the towel remains damp for hours and is perfect spot for the breeding of unwanted germs.

Why do we actually wash our bodies? Many of us believe washing our bodies is to keep us clean or we would smell. While this is true, have we ever thought of why we smell? We smell because our bodies build up dirt, sweats, dead skin cells and oils and that’s a lot of food that microorganisms (bacteria specifically) love to eat and then leaves waste on our skin and that causes us to smell. We wash to remove all these junk off our bodies. Most times, not all of our dead skin cells are totally removed during shower/bath and are usually removed by our body towels. Remember that our dead skin cells are food to bacteria, now imagine such food on our towels.

What are body towels?

Body towels are towels used to dry off water from the body after bath or shower. Body towels have different types of materials used to construct them and they include cotton, lyocell, bamboo, cotton-polyester blend, linen, and synthetic microfibers. These materials used in constructing these towels differ in the way they absorb, their quickness of drying, and texture. The best material for bath towels is cotton as it has a high level of absorbency and will thus quickly dry up the skin, is breathable and will dry fast and cotton doesn’t irritate the skin nor leave strands of fiber on the body.

How often should we wash our body towels?

We have to care for our towels as they are used daily and they need to be washed often as they could serve as a rich environment for bacteria. Bacteria on our towels can contribute to the increase in eczema, rashes, bacne and chest acne. Asides from acne, its unhygienic to have dirty towels.

The best kind of color of towels should be bright coloured towels on which dirt can easily be seen. The Cleaning Institute however recommends washing bath towels after three uses. This means that if you shower everyday, you should wash your bath towels twice a week. Regular laundry is sufficient to clean towels and remove any germs that are starting to accumulate. Towels should be hung to dry between uses and washed after 3 to 5 normal uses. Towels need to be allowed to dry before they are used again. So, remember to hang up your towel after each use. Also, a single person can more than two towels to him/herself.

While washing our towels bi-weekly or weekly can be done, there are some circumstances that calls for washing our towels more frequently than twice weekly;

Consequences of using dirty body towels.

In case you don’t know, dirty towels can spread viruses, fungi, and bacteria. The consequences of using a dirty towel include irritated skin and possibly spreading infections. The bacteria that causes staph infections (MRSA) is known to spread on towels and linens.

You should never share a towel with someone you don’t know or someone who’s sick. It’s not the end of the world if you get a few more uses out of your towel between washes, but you and your skin will be healthier the more often you wash them.

How to know when to replace your body towels?

Also, the life cycle of body towels depends on the quality of the towels and how you care for them. Generally, experts advise you should get new ones every two years. If you are still unsure, look for these signs:
